In response to the racism found on American streets, and on our very own in Iowa City, I organized the annual “Lyrics of Lucas Farms” poetry event, alongside Resurrection A/G staff and the Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association, to bring together poets, singers, and artists from all walks of life to speak up and speak up for justice, hope, and love in the city. From local college students to concerned residents, the event not only foregrounded the brilliant poetry and artistry of Iowa City’s residents and reputation as a UNESCO City of Literature, but also put front-and-center community voices speaking out on issues most affecting their community, through the spoken word and lyrical song.
